About this deal

When there is only one boat remaining (and five boats have been removed from play), the game immediately ends. This list has wallet-sized and wallet-friendly games; games for the first timer and for friends who have been playing for years. Mechanics such as using action tiles or unloading an opponent’s boat can change the pace of the game. I expand on this a bit more in the cons, but this is mostly about mentioning that the tokens are a bit small; it would be nice to have a slightly bigger game so that all the pieces were easier to pick up and read from a distance. First, turn over the first round card, this will have a picture of four boats on it, these are the four boats that will be used during this round, set the unused ones aside for now.

Players take it turn and can carry out 1 of the 3 following actions: Place a worker, unload a boat, or play an action tile. During the game, you will be transporting stones to the various sites to erect monuments in such a way that you score the most points. Throughout the game, you can constantly watch your opponent and adapt your strategy to make sure they don’t get too far ahead. The aim of the game is simple; collect the most points before all the boats bar one have left the harbour. Though it is nice to not be constantly accidentally pulling from the quarry when I want to take a turn. You must constantly watch what your opponents are doing, all while planning your own route to victory. The player who delivers their stones here can choose which pyramid to deliver to but, like the larger one on the ‘A’ side, they must be completed in columns from the top down and across from left to right. Having a ton of your stones on one ship isn’t necessarily a bad move, but it sets you up for potential negative consequences, because an opponent can pull that ship of yours and dump it onto a spot that won’t earn you as many points. The man was a master builder and the Benjamin Franklin of his day (in that he knew an awful lot about many subjects).

This usually means that if you’re unloading the last boat, choosing one that sticks your opponent with a bunch of blue tokens that they can’t use is often a fantastic strategy. That said, I wasn’t sure where to say it in my review, but the actual process of picking and unloading boats is pretty interesting, since your figure can be used for a row or column; it means you need to be smart about looking at both possible placement opportunities. Players gain points by not only having the most of their stones at a building site, but by having stones placed in specific arrangements at the building sites. So this opens up the tricky play opportunities to try and slow down, or deny, your opponent the tiles they are working hard to set themselves up to gain.

Aggressive play is rewarded in Imhotep, a rare characteristic among the games that impress the SdJ jury.

On your turn you my take one of four actions, get stones from your quarry, place a stone on a boat, sail a boat or play a blue card. Follow the greatest architect from Ancient Egypt, Imhotep, the engineer responsible for the first pyramid of Ancient Egypt.

It may be fine to neglect the Tomb, since it’s better to underindex on that location than it is to overindex, which would be bad. A player can gain up to three new stones from the quarry and place them on his sled, he can never have more than five stones on the sled. But if you’re playing with family or non-gamers, the good news is that everyone gets something when the ships sail (as long as they have a stone on the boat). On the A side players will receive points based on how many of their Tomb tiles are next to each other. At the beginning of the round, the top boat card is flipped over and this will tell the players which four boats are available for the round. Even if you can’t justify it, it’s not like the Pharaoh is going to bury you in whatever building you constructed poorly; that’s a ridiculous concept.
